Most online media now feature embedded, sponsored “fake news” items

This is also true of CNN, News.Yahoo.com and numerous other mainstream media web sites that allow advertisers to display fake news headlines as click bait.

An investigation found paid-for hoaxes about high-profile public figures next to users’ news feeds, duping them to click to alleged scam websites.

We see this on sites like news.yahoo.com and cnn.com, both of which have many sponsored items on their news pages. Many of the items are produced using “fake news” techniques to appeal to emotions and often covering topics that are not true or are exaggerated. Even though they are sponsored, they are made to look like real news to confuse the viewer. Major media outlets are themselves distributing fake news items under the guise that they are merely sponsored posts.
