Stores have to deal with people engaged in product return fraud. This is a problem, for example, where people have purchased a big screen TV the week before the Superbowl, and then returned it the week after or bought new clothing for a special occasion, but return it a few days later. And more.
To combat this, retail stores share your product return information with a third party company called “The Retail Equation”. This company creates a database of all the items returned by a consumer and uses that to produce a risk score for each consumer.
It is understandable why stores are doing this – but most consumers are unaware that everything is not only tracked today, but shared between retailers.
