Have you noticed that many online news web sites – both newspapers and TV stations – will run a news story and then leave it prominently on their web page for days – even weeks? The stories are typically ones that inflame reader or viewer emotions – and the effect of turning them into semi-permanent stories is to distort the perception of the importance of the story. The primary purpose is likely “click-bait” to drive advertising clicks, but they may also distort the public’s perception on important policy issues.
Facebook employs an army of censors to stop “hate speech”, but also at times, censors legitimate and fair political speech based on a complex multi hundred page mashup of censorship guidelines. I’m so old, I remember a few months ago when Mark Zuckerberg promised us AI would solve all these problems 🙂
Bloomberg news makes up a false headline news claim (based on zero evidence) and then uses their own fake news headline to justify banning all hobbyist model aircraft. Bloomberg is a fake news service based in the United States.
British media went crazy this past week, and doxxed a falsely accused innocent couple of flying drones over Gatwick Airport. Piers Morgan and The Mail both called the innocent couple “morons”. Journalism stoops to new lows the same week as Der Spiegel admitted its four time Reporter of the Year recipient had made up perhaps all of his stories or major parts of his stories. If all it took was a few million dollars and about 100 people to throw an election, why did U.S. presidential candidates spend billions on U.S. media advertising?
A “star” reporter and editor at Der Spiegel has admitted to fabricating his stories over a period of many years. He was the four time winner of Germany’s “Reporter of the Year” award and a two time winner of CNN’s Journalist of the Year. Yet the journalists who selected the winner never saw problems. Think of the role that such fake news plays in shaping public opinion, and its sharing on social media as part of propaganda campaigns.
Facebook, in spite of all its
public lies public comments about privacy, was giving away our personal data including access to private messages to big tech companies like Bing, Netflix, Spotify, Amazon, and Yahoo.
Propaganda messaging played and continues to play an enormous role in the public’s view on the Affordable Care Act a.k.a. ObamaCare. For example, Democrats have made pre-existing condition exclusions the centerpiece of their 2018 public commentary on the ACA.
Yet, never explained is that most Americans already had protections against pre-existing condition exclusions – it was the individual market that did not have protections (details in the post). Further, contrary to what you have been led to believe, the ACA does, in fact, establish a pre-existing condition waiting period. The ACA did not eliminate pre-existing condition waiting periods (see post for details).
The propaganda messaging used the methods of Fear, Assertion, Lying and What You See Is All There Is and has been extraordinarily effective. The Republican opposition has been clumsy and largely counterproductive with utterly ineffective propaganda messaging of its own.

Obamacare was judged unconstitutional by a Federal judge today. In response, a number of politicians made comments such as this one: “Today’s ruling is an assault on 133 million Americans with preexisting conditions”. That claim, however, is false. It is not well known but HIPAA (passed in 1996) provided protections for many, and about half of the U.S. states enacted various protections against pre-existing condition exclusions. This was hidden by design. By implying (falsely) that 1/3d of the U.S. population would be denied health insurance, the method of fear is used to create political support.
The new multi-level boarding scheme and “class-based” seating assignment is designed to embarrass the low payers, who must walk down the full front and center seats. Everyone knows that you, boarding last, are the cheap skate who bought a cheap ticket. This intimidation uses techniques of propaganda to persuade you to buy a higher priced ticket on your next flight.
Journalists who have partnered with Facebook to do fact checking, saying Facebook does not care and that the fact checking program is largely for public relations.
