YouTube bans comments on most videos with minors appearing in them

In order to make Youtube family friendly, most family oriented video channels will be de facto shut down, unable to have interaction with their viewers:

“We will be broadening this action to suspend comments on videos featuring young minors and videos featuring older minors that could be at risk of attracting predatory behavior,” YouTube added.

and an acknowledgement that AI doesn’t work, as claimed:

The company didn’t explain how it will decide which videos have minors in them. YouTube has used artificial intelligence software to classify videos and identify specific content, but the system has had mixed results, including recommending conspiracy theories and other questionable information.

In response to problems on Facebook, FB CEO Zuckerberg repeatedly said that they would use AI to solve their problems. This blog has repeatedly noted that the claims for what AI will solve have been greatly exaggerated.

Youtube has known about issues, including problems with comments, since at least 2017.  Youtube finally took this action after big advertisers pulled all advertising from Youtube. Video channels with minors – usually the family friendly ones – may find themselves unlikely to earn ad revenue from their videos. There are indications that family friendly videos might also drop out of the recommendations list, resulting in fewer views.
