Spelling error becomes national media outrage

Washington Post hyped a local story (almost entirely sourced to an activist group’s press release) into a national incident:

“After investigating, we don’t believe this was a case of discrimination or profiling. The customer approached and provided the name Aziz. The barista mistakenly spelled it incorrectly. We have connected with Mr. Johnson and apologized for this regrettable mistake.”

The comments to the WaPo article note the absurdity of WaPo’s pseudo news event with many listing the many times their own names were misspelled.

There is not enough real news to fill the endless web news cycle or the 24×7 cable TV news. Consequently, pseudo news media have to turn minor, local school yard issues in to national news to keep us in a state of perpetual outrage.

We’ve covered this issue before.
