Journalism: Journalism professor acknowledges that reporting is  about finding negativity

This in regards to the Des Moines Register taking down a $1+ million dollar fundraiser over two tweets he made when he was 16 years old, 8 years ago:

Cancel culture was another subject that impacted the chain of events.”This is the kind of the culture we live in,” Snider said. “Someone gets big for whatever reason and instantly people look for that negative thing to bring them down.”

As we now know, the reporter who wrote the take down story had a social media history with much worse and more offensive posts than the story subject. 2 days later the Des Moines Register has still not acknowledged the reporter by name, merely saying that a “staffer” is under investigation. The paper says it is “routine” to check the social media posts of all news subjects but does not check the posts of their own employees.

I am so old I remember that just yesterday the media said it was wrong and hurtful for adults to question the background of a 16 year old

Why the double standard?
