Social media is filled with commentary that the novel coronavirus is no big deal because it only impacts old people.
As you see, a disease that only kills old people is okay. More surprising is the disease targets people by their political belief – which can range from communism (China) to right wing Republicans (United States), which is a broad spectrum. It also, apparently, targets those that are climate skeptics – older people who are climate activists are immune. Amazing disease that understands the victims’ political beliefs!
Never let a crisis go to waste, of course. Social media is now filling with proclamations about whose politics are better. The one at the bottom is shredded by Snopes. The emergency was declared in April 2009 when only two people had been diagnosed. But who cares? This is social media!
Social media “friends” are sharing a variety of items proclaiming that SARS-CoV-2 is just a mild flu and otherwise exaggerated media hype. Besides, it only impacts old people. Plus, they seem to say, the experts at the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, state and local public health officials, and numerous scientists do not know what they are talking about.
Instead, we should be listening to professional blowhards who say we have nothing to worry about. Of course, I’m so old I remember when the same person blasted Trump for his ineffective response to SARS-CoV-2 – you know, the disease that is just a mild flu and otherwise exaggerated. These people are not consistent from one week to the next. But this nonsense is spread on social media by “friends” whose memory appears to be less than 24 hours.
Friends who insisted we listen to scientists (on climate change) are now telling us we should listen to people with an undergrad degree in English and History when it comes to viruses and epidemics.
This makes sense to who?
