Social media: Claim that car fatalities and injuries went up

This was posted on a government thread about Covid-19. Not sure what point was being made with this post, but it does include a possible fact check item:

Here’s the actual trend. When looking at accident data, over time, you have to correct for total miles traveled – in most years, people travel slightly more miles than the year before, and each year, the population of drivers in the U.S. increases slightly.

The red line shows what has happened with vehicle fatalities over time. By all metrics, they’ve gone down – by a lot – as population and miles traveled have gone up. This would be very good news.

This chart is from Wikipedia. I used to create my own chart like this but have not kept it up to date.
