“Facebook is a disinformation-for-profit machine that won’t accept responsibility for its role in the safety of our democracy and people,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., tweeted following the decision on Wednesday. “Trump should be banned for good, but Facebook will continue to fumble with its power until Congress and antitrust regulators rein in Big Tech.”
I disagree with Sen. Warren. The response to speech we do not like is more speech. A temporary suspension on Trump after his support for the January 6th invasion of the Capitol was appropriate. But I am uncomfortable with the notion that billionaires (Zuckerburg, Dorsey) are now he arbiter of truth and speech. They literally can and do censor elected world leaders – which ought to make all of us uncomfortable.
