Reporters lack math and logic skills

Do you see the problem here?

Now, more than two years and 999,999 fatalities later, the U.S. death toll is the world’s highest total by a significant margin, figures show. In a distant second is Brazil, which has recorded just over 660,000 confirmed Covid deaths.

Source: Covid’s toll in the U.S. reaches a once unfathomable number: 1 million deaths

The implication is the U.S. had the worst Covid record in the world.

Highly misleading.

The U.S., by population, is one of the largest countries in the world.

When converted to Covid mortality per million (which adjusts for each country’s population), the U.S. ranks #18 on the list – and Brazil’s mortality rate is higher than the U.S.

UPDATE

WHO releases new report estimating that 4.7 million died in India.

The estimates for a 24-month period (2020 and 2021) include a breakdown of excess mortality by age and sex. They confirm that the global death toll was higher for men than for women (57% male, 43% female) and higher among older adults. The absolute count of the excess deaths is affected by the population size. The number of excess deaths per 100,000 gives a more objective picture of the pandemic than reported COVID-19 mortality data.
