The metric is based on these factors – none of which measure happiness (read about that background here).

3. health
4. freedom
5. generosity
6. absence of corruption

And, as it does every year, it selects Scandinavian countries as the “happiest” – this is what happens when you define a metric that defines “happiness” as “lives in a Scandinavian country”. It’s total bullshit.

This year’s ranking is similar to those in the past, with the same Nordic countries taking the top three spots. Just like in 2022, Denmark came in at no. 2 and was followed by Iceland at no. 3.

Of course, they find an expert to explain the happiness measure – even though, what he cites is not one of the metrics used in the calculation:

According to Frank Martela, a Finnish philosopher and psychology researcher, some of the reasons why people in Finland are so happy is because they don’t compare themselves to their neighbors, don’t overlook the benefits of nature, and don’t break the community circle of trust.
