Censorship: New Twitter says it will continue to censor posts promoting violence

Prior to this week, the following tweet was circulating from the trans activist community.

And was ignored by most people. Then, early in the week before this event, a self-identified trans FtM opened fire in a private school in Nashville, TN, killing children and adults.

Then, persons in the trans community, the left and the right, began sharing this poster, depending on the point they wanted to make.

Twitter says that the wording “vengeance” may be considered as a call to violence and has now banned the sharing of this item on Twitter and has made temporary account suspensions (typically a week) for anyone who shared it on Twitter.

Thus, the censorship appears not to be political in nature (but easy to see why someone would interpret it that way) but because of its apparent call to violence, which is a type of message that is banned on Twitter.

I had saved a copy of this and had not planned to do anything with it, even post it here. But after the announcement that Twitter was suspending accounts of those who shared this factually correct poster, this became a case study in issues of censorship, and that the new Twitter does intend to censor content deemed inappropriate.

Update: Meanwhile, the press secretary for the Gov. of Arizona (D) put out this tweet advocating violence. She has since been fired. Violence seems to begat more violence among the activist crowds of many political perspectives.

There are a great many angry people, filled with hate – is this increasing or just more visible? Or is it easier for angry – and especially the violent angry – to act on their anger?
